The global medical device industry is one of the fastest growing industrial sectors. According to 2015 statistics, the medical device industry accounts for more than 10% of the total metal cutting industry in the world.

Smaller, more complex, and more accurate medical device industry components are often made from difficult-to-machine materials, and the demand for such components continues to grow. When referring to processing in the medical device industry, the terminology often includes all surgical implants, orthopedic devices and medical devices involved; it also includes small-sized processing and micromachining, as today's medical implants often include or include Tiny parts. Among the difficult-to-machine materials with excellent performance, titanium alloy is the most commonly used material in the medical device industry. This stems from its biocompatibility with the human body.

Inviting to participate in the challenges of the medical device industry, small metal processing plants competing in this area must develop a set of advanced technological capabilities to meet the special needs of the medical device industry, especially when dealing with small batches and prototype production.

Noting the special challenges from the medical device industry, Isa eventually developed related cutting tools that have expanded the range of applications related to the medical device industry with creative work and field trials in the leading R&D department. In addition to the new tools of technological innovation, the staff of the Iska R&D department has also modified a number of unique tools that are already popular in the market to enable efficient and economical machining of small parts.

Iskar's high-efficiency, small-size cutting tools have made possible technological advances in several important areas, expanding the scope of application and optimizing the machining solution: using the most suitable substrate; performing advanced coatings; specially developed tool shapes; upgrading Super secure clamping system. Listed below:

1. New turning-grooving knife with side locking mechanism (Overlord knife)

Iskar's new GEHSR/L-SL series, designed for Swiss automatic lathes and small automated lathes, is an upgraded version of the screw-on GEHSR/L series that was previously marketed. The newly developed easy-to-operate blade clamping system allows the operator to reliably lock the blade from the front and back of the toolholder. After the blade is quickly locked with screws, a special plastic screw cap can be placed over the opposite side of the blade to prevent chips from entering. If you want to index the blade in the opposite direction, you can also move the screw to the opposite direction of the toolholder.

GEHSR/L-SL shanks with 10, 12 and 16 mm knives are available for clamping GEPI or GEMI inserts with different chipbreakers. The blade has a cutting width ranging from 2.2 to 3.2 mm. Light cutting parameters are required when turning small parts. For such processing, it is better to use a more economical small-sized blade instead of a large-sized blade. The short head design of the GEHSR/L toolholders results in higher tool rigidity and improved machining reliability, which ultimately allows for higher cutting parameters for improved surface quality.

When using Isa's previous generation of shanks or other existing shanks on small Swiss machines, the shank needs to be removed from the turret to replace the blades. The main advantage of Iskar's new generation of shank is that the blade can be replaced without removing the shank from the turret. In addition to the above tools, Iska also offers the GHSR/L-JHP-SL series of high pressure cooling tools with the same specifications. The high pressure cooling tool has 3 separate coolant inlets to provide a suitable machining solution for different machine configurations. (figure 1)

2. Upgraded SWISSCUT INNOVAL Series

Iskar upgraded the SWISSCUT series. The elliptical clamping hole design at the leading edge of the new blade technology brings two major improvements. Prior to the introduction of the tool, Iskar's existing tools and all major competitors' various arbor and inserts were capable of loading and unloading the blade from a single direction on the front or back of the shank. In the SWISSCUT INNOVAL series, the same arbor and insert can handle the loading and unloading of the blade from the front and back.

Iskar's new imaginary SWISSCUT INNOVAL tool series features special clamping screws that can be loaded and unloaded from both sides of the shank so that the clamping screw does not need to be completely removed during the indexing operation of the insert. A comparison of the series on the market that is similar to the Isca SWISSCUT series requires that the clamping screws be completely removed from the shank when the insert is indexed. When using these tools, the clamping screws are easy to fall and are lost. The new SWISSCUT INNOVAL new series reduces the number of parts required and reduces the user's inventory costs. (figure 2)
