Every time the cold wind howls through the streets, the delicate Canary date palms on Yarn Road have to be dressed like humans—layered up and protected. Yesterday, gardeners in Hangzhou took action by wrapping the three date palm trees with a thin protective film. But it's not as simple as just draping them in blankets.
When the reporter arrived at the scene yesterday afternoon, scaffolding had already been set up around the tall trees. Workers stood on towering platforms, carefully inserting long fronds into the frames to create a stable structure for filming. It was a meticulous process, showing just how much effort goes into keeping these tropical beauties alive in a city that’s far from their natural habitat.
Mr. Wang, a local gardener, explained that the Canary date palm is originally from a tropical maritime climate and isn’t used to the harsh winters in Hangzhou. The thin film helps reduce water loss and protects the leaves from frost damage. However, he also noted that after two years of careful tending, the trees have gradually adapted to the local climate. Some even produced green jujube seeds, which is a sign they're becoming more resilient.
“Now, if we don’t cover them with the film, they should be able to survive the Winter,†he said. “But since these trees are quite expensive, we’re just being cautious.â€
Mr. Li, a regular passerby on Yarn Road, praised the elegant appearance of the date palms. “They stand tall and proud, adding a lot of beauty to the city,†he said. “But they’re really delicate. In Summer, they need shade; in winter, they need warmth.†He admitted that maintaining such trees comes with a high cost.
Looking ahead, he suggested that cities should think more carefully before introducing foreign species. “It’s not enough to just choose plants because they look nice,†he said. “We need to consider whether they can truly thrive in our environment.â€
According to officials, the “winter clothing†for the Canary date palms will remain in place until Spring, when temperatures begin to rise again.
