Whenever the cold wind howled through the streets, the delicate Canary date palms on Yarn Road had to stand tall—like a man bracing against the chill. On the previous day, gardeners in Hangzhou wrapped the three towering date palms with a thin protective film, an unusual but necessary measure to shield them from the Winter’s bite. But it wasn’t as simple as just draping them in fabric. By mid-afternoon, reporters arrived at the scene and found scaffolding erected around the trees, reaching up to ten meters high. Workers climbed the structures carefully, securing long, frond-like branches of the date palms into the frames, all to make filming easier. The process was slow and meticulous, highlighting just how much effort goes into maintaining these exotic plants in a city where winters can be harsh for tropical species. Mr. Wang, who oversees the care of the trees, explained that the Canary date palm is native to tropical coastal regions and isn't well-suited for Hangzhou's colder climate. "The thin film helps reduce moisture loss and prevents the leaves from freezing," he said. However, after two years of careful tending, the trees have started to adapt. In fact, they even produced small green jujube seeds this year. “Now, they might not need the film to survive,” he added, though he admitted the covering is still applied as a precaution. “These trees are expensive, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.” Mr. Li, a regular passerby on Yarn Road, praised the aesthetic value of the date palms. “They’re tall, elegant, and add a lot of beauty to the city,” he said. But he also pointed out their fragility. “In Summer, you have to give them shade; in winter, you have to warm them up.” He questioned the cost of maintaining such foreign species. “When cities introduce new plants, they should think more about whether they’ll thrive here, rather than just going for looks.” It’s reported that the “winter clothes” on the Canary date palms will stay in place until Spring, ensuring the trees remain protected through the coldest months. As the city continues to grow and beautify itself, the challenge remains: how to balance aesthetics with sustainability when bringing in exotic flora.
