Japan's AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), Mitsubishi Corp and Tokki Corp jointly developed a solar cell prototype that resembles a plant leaf. As shown in the following figure, the leaves of this potted plant are made of bright green solar cells. The thin solar battery cell is composed of a plastic substrate, a phthalocyanine dye layer, fullerenes (spherical shell carbon molecules), and the like. The eight 7.5cm2 solar cells are connected to each other to form a series of solar cell modules of about 60cm2. AIST, Mitsubishi and Tokki have improved the durability of the module by printing an ultra-thin protective sheet on the cell module to prevent moisture and oxygen from entering. The purpose of AIST's research and development of this innovation module is to expand ultra-thin solar cells into important areas of research, such as construction materials, exterior walls, windows, clothing materials, household products, leisure products, outdoor products and toys.
