Herpes simplex virus infection is a serious global health problem and there is currently no effective preventive vaccine. The Wuhan Institute of Virology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has made significant progress in the screening of antibodies against herpes simplex virus neutralizing antibodies. Relevant research results have recently been published online in the international professional journal Antiviral Research.

According to Wang Hualin, a researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, although antiviral chemicals represented by acyclovir can be used for clinical treatment, the emergence of drug-resistant strains and the toxic side effects of drugs have led to the exploration and treatment of herpes simplex. New strategies for viruses and their resistant strains are urgent.

The envelope glycoprotein of herpes simplex virus can induce cellular and humoral immune responses in the body, and is the main immunogen that induces the production of neutralizing antibodies in the body. This protein is also a key molecule in the process of virus entry into host cells and virus transmission. Therefore, the important target molecule for scientists to study novel therapeutic strategies for viral vaccines and viral infections is its envelope glycoprotein.

Wang Hualin's research team successfully screened a new monoclonal antibody and found that it recognizes a new continuous antigenic epitope in the envelope glycoprotein, which has high herpes simplex virus neutralizing activity, and at the cellular level and on animal models. The neutralizing effect of monoclonal antibodies was evaluated.

The results show that this new monoclonal antibody can not only effectively neutralize the infection of the virus, but also block the way of virus cell-to-cell transmission. At the same time, this antibody is also effective in inhibiting the formation of syncytia caused by viral infection.

This study laid the foundation for a new therapeutic strategy for the design of herpes simplex virus vaccines and viral infections.
