Silkworm frass, also known as silkworm manure, is a highly nutritious feed ingredient with a crude protein content of 15.4%, ranking just below wheat bran and surpassing rice bran and grass. This makes it an excellent feed option for livestock and poultry, offering numerous benefits when incorporated into their diet. Feeding pigs with silkworm frass can significantly reduce the amount of fine feed needed, while promoting rapid weight gain and increasing the slaughter rate. Additionally, sows that consume silkworm frass tend to produce more milk, which helps improve the growth of their piglets. For sheep, silkworm frass has been shown to increase milk production and enhance wool yield. In some cases, the length of the wool has reached up to 14 cm, demonstrating its positive impact on fiber quality. In cattle, feeding silkworm frass improves overall resilience and physical endurance, making them better suited for demanding conditions. For rabbits, it leads to increased fat accumulation and reduced water content, resulting in richer meat quality. When added to chicken feed at a 5% concentration, silkworm frass enhances the color of egg yolks, making them more vibrant and visually appealing. This is especially beneficial for commercial egg producers who prioritize appearance. With fish, silkworm frass promotes faster growth and reduces the likelihood of disease. For every 1,000 kg of silkworm frass used, approximately 100 kg of fresh fish can be produced, showing its effectiveness in aquaculture. Although fresh silkworm frass is rich in nutrients, it has a short shelf life and is prone to spoilage and mold if not properly handled. To extend its usability, it should be dried to keep moisture levels below 15%. Alternatively, it can be ensiled in large containers such as silos or cement pits, ensuring tight packing to encourage lactic acid fermentation. It’s also important to note that silkworm frass may contain pathogens that affect silkworms themselves. Therefore, it should never be mixed with or stored near live silkworms to prevent contamination and potential disease spread. By properly managing and utilizing silkworm frass, farmers can enhance animal performance while making efficient use of a valuable byproduct.
