This year, it is estimated that the area of summer millet cultivation in our city will reach 300,000 mu, primarily concentrated in Longan District, Anyang County, and Linzhou City. To achieve high yields, local agricultural experts from the Academy of Agricultural Sciences have shared key techniques for successful millet farming. The best time to plant millet is mid-June. One of the most effective methods is "stick seeding," which helps seeds absorb more sunlight and heat, reduces soil moisture loss, and strengthens root development. Stick-seeded fields tend to be cooler on the surface compared to plowed land, reducing the risk of sprouting due to excessive heat or water stress. Soil preparation is crucial. Since millet seeds are small, they need to be sown shallowly in fine, well-prepared soil. In dryland areas like Spring Valley, water mainly comes from natural rainfall, so proper water conservation is essential. Before planting, deep plowing is recommended, and a base fertilizer—such as farmyard manure mixed with phosphate—is applied. A typical application is about 5 kg of ammonium phosphate per mu to ensure sufficient nutrients for early growth. Using improved varieties can increase yield by 10% to 15%. In Anyang, popular varieties include Yugu No. 9 and Yugu No. 11. Seed treatment, such as sunning, soaking, and coating, helps improve germination rates. Sowing rate should be between 1.5 to 2 kg per mu, with a depth of 3 to 5 cm. Field management is also important. After seedlings emerge, keep a distance of at least 3 cm between plants to avoid overcrowding. Weeds must be removed promptly, either manually or with herbicides. Pests like chestnut ash and corn borers should be monitored during the jointing and heading stages. Healthy seedlings should be thinned out to promote better growth. Harvesting is critical. In Anyang’s Xiagu region, millet typically takes around 88 days to mature. Harvesting too early results in underdeveloped grains with high moisture content, while harvesting too late can cause the stems to dry out and the grains to become brittle. After threshing, millet should be dried immediately, with moisture levels kept below 13% for safe storage. By following these practices, farmers can significantly improve their millet yields and quality, ensuring a successful harvest season.
