**Bougainvillea spectabilis**
Also known as Bougainvillea, Paper Flower, or Red Dragonfly, this vibrant flowering plant belongs to the family Nyctaginaceae (formerly classified under Mirabilis). Native to Brazil, it is widely cultivated in China and thrives in warm, humid climates. It can survive temperatures above 3°C, making it suitable for outdoor planting in milder regions. For optimal flowering, temperatures should remain above 15°C.
This evergreen climbing shrub features thorny stems that arch gracefully and are covered in fine hair. Its leaves are alternate, ovate, or ovate-lanceolate with smooth edges. The showy flowers are actually modified bracts that appear in clusters of three, surrounded by leaf-like structures. These bracts are typically ovoid, ranging from purple to red, and measure 3 to 3.5 cm in length. The true flowers are tubular, light yellow, and densely covered in hair.
The blooming period is exceptionally long, making it a popular choice for gardens and landscapes. Propagation methods include cuttings, air layering, and grafting. Cuttings are best taken between March and June, with roots developing within 7 to 14 days. Air layering involves girdling a 1- to 1.5-cm wide section of the bark, and rooting usually occurs within a month. Planting is most successful in spring.
During the growing season, regular pruning helps promote flower bud formation and encourages lateral growth. The ideal temperature range for potted plants is 15–30°C. Its large, colorful blooms make it a stunning addition to gardens, bonsai collections, hedges, or shaped topiaries.
Other species in the same genus include *Bougainvillea glabra*, commonly known as the paperflower. The triangular flower, often associated with *Bougainvillea spectabilis*, is the national flower of Zambia. With its striking appearance and long-lasting blooms, it's a favorite among gardeners and landscape designers alike.
