At MaMa Jean’s Natural Market, we take great pride in offering products that not only stand out but also make a meaningful impact on the world. Among our cherished items is the African Market Basket, a true testament to craftsmanship and purpose. These baskets come in an array of shapes, sizes, and designs, each one uniquely handwoven in Bolgatanga, Ghana. Known as the largest town in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Bolgatanga sits roughly 20 miles south of the Burkina Faso border and is close to the edge of the Sahara Desert. Living conditions here are tough, with farming being particularly challenging. Women in the area have found a way to support their families by weaving these beautiful baskets using locally grown straw. Basket weaving has become a vital source of income for the communities around Bolgatanga, providing employment to approximately 10,000 people, mostly women. The tradition of basket weaving has been passed down through generations and plays a crucial role in sustaining local livelihoods. A woman managing household duties alongside basket weaving can typically produce around two baskets per week. African Market Baskets was founded by Steve Karowe, who also established Every Basket Helps, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting humanitarian initiatives in Ghana. African Market Baskets contributes 10% of its profits to this cause. Steve frequently visits Ghana to connect with the weavers and supervise Every Basket Helps projects such as providing school supplies for the weavers' children, organizing healthcare services, and funding the construction of a community weaving center that benefits two villages and more than 400 weavers. Our commitment at African Market Baskets lies in three core values: Quality, Value, and Integrity. Over the past 25 years, founder and CEO Steve Karowe has embraced the Fair Trade philosophy, fostering economic partnerships rooted in dialogue, transparency, and mutual respect. We adhere strictly to Fair Trade Federation principles, including creating opportunities for marginalized producers, ensuring fair payment, promoting safe working environments, and preserving cultural identity. Additionally, we're proud members of Green America, aligning ourselves with their mission to drive social justice and environmental sustainability through consumer and market actions. This story continues to evolve, reflecting our ongoing dedication to empowering artisans while bringing beauty into homes worldwide. (Photo Credit: African Market Baskets)
