Pygnet is a species belonging to the order Hemiptera, specifically in the family Cicadellidae. It primarily affects ornamental plants such as cherry blossoms, paste stems, and azaleas. Both adult and nymph stages feed by sucking sap from the underside of leaves, causing pale spots on the upper surface. Additionally, their excrement appears as dark, freckle-like spots on the leaf backs, making them easy to spot. Severe infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, which weakens the plant and reduces its aesthetic value. In northern regions, Pygnet completes 4–5 generations per year. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, on branches, in cracks, among weeds, and in soil or rock crevices. They become active in early April of the following year, flying to host plants to feed and reproduce. Eggs are laid on the underside of leaves, near the main veins. By mid-May, multiple instars emerge simultaneously, overlapping in generations. The most severe damage occurs between July and August. As autumn approaches, adults begin searching for suitable overwintering sites, typically by late October. Newly hatched nymphs are relatively inactive and tend to cluster together. To manage Pygnet infestations, several control methods can be applied: 1. In winter, remove dead branches, fallen leaves, and weeds to eliminate overwintering adults. 2. During summer, provide shade and use proper watering techniques to reduce stress on host plants, thereby minimizing damage. 3. Early in the season, especially during the first generation of adults, apply insecticides such as 80% dichlorvos EC diluted 1000 times, 40% dimethoate at 1000 times dilution, 50% chlorpyrifos (CASS Loose) at 1000 times, or 50% phoxim EC at 1000 times. These sprays are effective when applied thoroughly to the undersides of leaves where the pests reside. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are essential to prevent heavy infestations and protect the health of ornamental plants.
