Soil degradation in vegetable farming is a serious issue that affects crop yield and quality. Understanding its causes and implementing effective management strategies is essential for sustainable agriculture. First, the main causes of soil deterioration include excessive use of chemical fertilizers without enough organic matter, leading to reduced soil fertility. This practice decreases organic content, reduces air permeability, and weakens microbial activity, making it harder for vegetables to develop strong roots. Over time, this results in compacted soil and poor plant growth. Second, salinization becomes worse when too many chemical fertilizers are applied. This increases the concentration of salt ions in the soil, raising the pH level and making it more difficult for plants to absorb water. As a result, root development is hindered, and overall plant health declines. Third, the continuous cultivation of vegetables over many years leads to a depletion of trace elements like zinc, boron, molybdenum, copper, and manganese. Without proper supplementation, these nutrients become scarce, negatively affecting plant growth and development. Fourth, shallow soil layers can limit root expansion, especially if deep plowing is not used. Many farmers rely on manual planting or intercropping without deep tilling, which restricts root penetration and limits nutrient uptake. Lastly, continuous cropping increases the buildup of pests and pathogens in the soil. This leads to more frequent disease outbreaks, root rot, and even plant death. The increased use of pesticides to combat these issues also raises the risk of contamination in vegetables. To address these problems, several solutions can be implemented. Crop rotation is one of the most effective methods. By alternating crops such as melons and onions, you can reduce pest and disease pressure while improving soil fertility. Onions and garlic, for example, use fewer nutrients than melons, allowing better resource utilization. Adding organic manure helps improve soil structure by forming humus, which enhances soil aggregation, water retention, and aeration. It also promotes root growth and strengthens plant resistance to diseases. Implementing proper fallow periods allows the soil to recover. During winter, exposing the soil to sunlight through deep plowing can help eliminate pests and restore soil health. Applying trace elements as either base fertilizer or foliar spray is also important. For instance, applying 1-1.5 kg of zinc sulfate, 0.3-0.5 kg of borax, 0.1-0.2 kg of ammonium molybdate, 1-2 kg of copper sulfate, and 2-3 kg of manganese sulfate as base fertilizer can replenish missing nutrients. Foliar sprays with appropriate concentrations can also meet the needs of vegetables during their growing season. Finally, deep plowing at each planting time improves soil structure and increases its ability to retain water and nutrients. Even if cattle plowing isn't possible, manually digging deeply can achieve similar benefits, promoting healthier vegetable growth. By addressing these factors, farmers can maintain soil health and ensure long-term productivity in vegetable farming.
