Agricultural diesel engines are typically water-cooled and often rely on natural water sources like river or well water for cooling. Over time, these water sources can lead to the buildup of mineral deposits inside the cooling tank. This scale not only reduces the engine's ability to dissipate heat effectively but can also cause overheating, which leads to poor working conditions for internal components, increased wear, reduced performance, and even severe issues like "stuck cylinders," "burned bearings," or "shaft seizing."
To maintain the efficiency and longevity of your diesel engine, it’s important to regularly clean the cooling system. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it properly:
First, start the diesel engine and let it run at a medium speed until the water temperature rises above 50°C. Once this is achieved, turn off the engine and allow all the cooling water to drain completely from the tank.
Next, prepare a cleaning solution by mixing 40 pounds of water with 3 pounds of caustic soda and 1 pound of kerosene. Stir the mixture thoroughly and pour it into the cooling tank.
Then, restart the engine and let it run at medium speed for 5 to 10 minutes. After that, turn it off and let the cleaning solution sit in the tank for about 10 hours to allow the scale to loosen.
After the soaking period, start the engine again and adjust the throttle to vary the speed, causing the engine to vibrate. This vibration helps dislodge the loosened scale from the tank walls, allowing it to mix into the cleaning solution. Run the engine for another 5 to 10 minutes.
Finally, flush out the cleaning solution by filling the tank with fresh water, starting the engine, and running it at a moderate speed for 5 minutes before draining. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times to ensure the system is fully cleaned.
Regular maintenance like this can significantly extend the life of your diesel engine and prevent costly breakdowns. Always make sure to follow safety precautions when handling chemicals and hot equipment.
