Agricultural diesel engines typically rely on water cooling systems for efficient heat dissipation. However, many operators use river water or well water directly without proper filtration or treatment. Over time, this leads to the accumulation of mineral deposits and scale inside the cooling tank. These deposits can severely hinder the engine's ability to cool properly, causing the temperature to rise beyond safe limits. This overheating can lead to serious issues such as increased component wear, reduced engine performance, and even catastrophic failures like "stuck cylinders," "burned bearings," or "shaft seizing."
Cleaning the cooling system is essential to maintain the engine’s efficiency and longevity. Here’s a step-by-step guide to effectively clean the diesel engine’s water tank:
First, start the engine and let it run at a medium speed until the coolant temperature rises above 50°C. Once this is achieved, turn off the engine and allow all the remaining coolant to drain completely from the tank.
Next, prepare a cleaning solution by mixing 40 pounds of water with 3 pounds of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and 1 pound of kerosene. Stir the mixture thoroughly and pour it into the cooling tank.
Then, restart the engine and run it at a medium speed for 5–10 minutes. After that, turn it off and let the cleaning solution sit in the tank for approximately 10 hours. This allows the solution to break down and loosen the scale buildup.
After the soaking period, restart the engine again, and adjust the throttle to vary the speed—speeding up and slowing down intermittently. This fluctuation helps dislodge the loosened scale from the tank walls, allowing it to mix into the cleaning solution.
Once the process is complete, drain the cleaning solution from the tank. Then, refill the tank with fresh water, start the engine, and run it at a moderate speed for about 5 minutes before draining the water. Repeat this rinsing process 2–3 times to ensure all residues are removed.
By following these steps regularly, you can significantly extend the life of your diesel engine and prevent costly breakdowns caused by scale buildup. It’s always a good idea to use treated or distilled water in the future to minimize the risk of mineral deposits forming again.
