I’ve always had a deep connection with coffee. Growing up, I’d sneak sips of my mom's friends’ leftover coffee when they left their half-drunk cups behind after church meetings. As I grew older, coffee became my companion—staying awake during late-night study sessions in college and greeting me every morning as I entered the workforce. At one point, I even considered myself something of a coffee connoisseur, favoring organic beans grown without pesticides. But these days, although I limit my coffee consumption to special occasions, my affection for it remains strong. Recently, my perspective on coffee shifted entirely thanks to an incredible experience. I was invited by Steve Gassaway from Mountain Bird Coffee in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, to visit Nicaragua—a country renowned for its coffee production. To be honest, I used to tease Steve about his coffee not being certified organic. Maybe that’s why he extended this invitation—to show me firsthand what goes into producing exceptional coffee. He arranged for me to meet the Ferrey family at El Recreo Estate, who’ve been cultivating specialty coffee for over five decades. Joining us were Steve’s wife Rhonda, Claire Bullard, our travel agent, and Justin Eaton, a fellow coffee enthusiast and café owner from Bentonville, AR. None of us could have anticipated how profoundly this journey would impact us. Our flight landed in Managua, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Jinotega, home to the El Recreo coffee plantation. The Jinotega region, known as the "coffee triangle," benefits from ideal high-altitude growing conditions. On Monday morning, we were welcomed by Carlos Ferrey, the youngest son of the estate’s owners, Carlos and Leana Ferrey. Carlos and his sister Miriam guided us through the entire trip. The Ferrey family is deeply involved in every aspect of coffee production, from seed to cup. Carlos and Jorge manage the plantation, implementing cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency. Meanwhile, Miriam and her husband Hector handle the import process from the U.S., ensuring their coffee reaches markets worldwide. Arriving at the plantation mid-afternoon, we enjoyed a quick lunch before heading to the fields for the daily bean measurement ritual. Coincidentally, it was also the day of the Immaculate Conception celebrations, adding a festive touch to our visit. After the counting, we returned to the community center to celebrate, followed by an early night. Tuesday began with a tour of the processing mill, where we witnessed the meticulous steps involved in washing, peeling, drying, and packaging the beans. Later, we participated in a coffee-picking competition. We learned that not all berries ripen simultaneously, so careful selection is crucial. Picking coffee is harder than it looks, and I found myself marveling at its affordability. Following the competition, we prepared gifts for the children living on the farm. Approximately 40 families reside there year-round, enjoying permanent housing, educational opportunities, medical facilities, and fair wages. The estate also operates a technical training school, teaching sustainable farming practices and farm management. Promotions are based on merit, with many foremen starting as pickers. Additionally, they mentor nearby small-scale farmers and offer literacy classes. After lunch, we drove for 45 minutes to Zaragoza, another plantation owned by the Ferreys. Here, we celebrated with the children and visited the nursery where new coffee trees are cultivated. Each tree takes roughly five years to mature and produce beans. Hundreds of trees are planted annually to maintain consistent yields. Returning from Zaragoza, we enjoyed another delightful dinner before calling it a night. Wednesday brought mixed emotions. We departed for Managua, some of us having early flights the following morning. En route, we stopped in Jinotega to explore the bustling market. In Managua, we shopped briefly before gathering for a heartfelt farewell dinner with the Ferrey family. This trip to El Recreo was nothing short of magical. The beauty of the landscape and the warmth of the people left an indelible mark on me. Every sip of El Recreo coffee will remind me of this unforgettable journey and the remarkable individuals I met—the Ferrey family, Steve and Rhonda Gassaway, Claire Bullard, and Justin Eaton.
