In ancient China, during the Song Dynasty, Sun Guangxian recorded in his work *Bei Meng Suo Yan* a fascinating tale about an elderly woman who appeared to be no more than a young girl. Despite being over half a year old (likely a translation error for "over 60 years old"), she remained slim and youthful in appearance. When asked about her secret to looking so young, she simply replied that she had no special techniques—only one thing: eating three dates every day. This simple practice eventually became a well-known saying among the people: "Eating three dates a day keeps you from looking old."
The jujube, or red date, has long been valued in traditional Chinese medicine. The *Compendium of Materia Medica* notes its ability to soothe the body, calm the stomach, and support the flow of energy through nine acupuncture points and twelve meridians. It was considered one of the five essential fruits and praised for its rich nutritional content. According to ancient texts, the larger the jujube, the more beneficial it was believed to be.
Over time, various folk sayings emerged around the fruit:
- "Eat three dates a day, and you won’t need a matchmaker."
- "A date by the door, and your face stays young until old age."
- "For good skin, add red dates to your porridge."
- "Grains with jujubes are better than ginseng."
- "One day with three dates means you don’t grow old quickly."
- "Better to skip meat on the third day than miss a date on the first."
- "No gifts on holidays? Just give dates instead."
Modern science has confirmed many of these traditional beliefs. Studies show that jujubes are rich in carbohydrates like glucose, fructose, and sucrose, as well as vitamins such as C, B2, B1, beta-carotene, and niacin. These nutrients contribute to immune system support, helping the body resist illness.
Research on animals has also shown that jujube extracts can increase muscle strength and promote weight gain. In experiments, mice given jujube decoctions showed improved swimming endurance and greater weight gain compared to controls. Jujubes have also demonstrated liver-protective properties, with studies showing they can improve liver function in rabbits exposed to toxins.
Additionally, jujubes may help reduce allergic reactions by inhibiting antibody production in mice. They also have sedative effects due to compounds like flavonoid glycosides, which can calm the nervous system and lower blood pressure.
Some compounds found in jujubes, including citric acid and phytic acid, have shown anti-cancer potential in laboratory tests, particularly in suppressing certain types of tumors. Overall, jujubes offer a wide range of health benefits, making them a valuable addition to a balanced diet.
