At a press conference held by the Science and Technology Department of Gansu Province on the 2nd, it was revealed that Lanzhou University has developed an innovative method for the rapid detection of melamine in liquid milk. This breakthrough technology has been officially recognized for its potential to significantly improve food safety monitoring. The research was conducted by a team led by Professors Liu Weisheng and Huang Guosheng from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Lanzhou University. According to the research group's economic analysis, the equipment required for this method is simple, affordable, and easily accessible. The total cost of the instruments is less than 1,000 yuan, while the cost per test reagent is approximately 20 yuan. With this system, up to four to five samples can be tested continuously within one hour, making it highly efficient and cost-effective. To ensure the reliability and practicality of the new testing method, the Science and Technology Department of Gansu Province and the Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision organized six institutions to conduct verification in accordance with national standards. After thorough evaluation, the expert appraisal committee concluded that the method is fast, highly sensitive, low-cost, and easy to operate. It has reached a domestic leading level, marking a significant advancement in the field of food safety testing. This development not only enhances the ability to detect harmful substances in milk but also provides a practical solution that can be widely adopted, especially in regions with limited resources. The technology represents a major step forward in improving public health and food safety standards across the country.
