After long-distance transportation, newly acquired rabbits often experience stress, which leads to a decline in their physical condition and weakened immunity. As a result, the initial period of feeding and management is critical. If not properly handled, many rabbits may die, causing significant economic losses and creating long-term challenges in production management. Therefore, effective management during this early stage is essential for successful rabbit farming.
1. **Dark and Quiet Environment**
Once the rabbits are unloaded, they should be immediately placed in a dimly lit and quiet area. This helps reduce light and noise stimulation, allowing them to rest and recover from the stress of transportation more quickly.
2. **Hydration First, Then Feeding**
Do not feed the rabbits immediately after unloading. Allow them to rest for about 30 minutes first, then offer water. It's recommended to provide 5% glucose water or 1% salt water. Adding electrolytes or vitamins can further support recovery. To prevent disease due to lowered immunity, you can add water-soluble antibiotics like ciprofloxacin or norfloxacin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. On the first day, feed only half the usual amount, and gradually increase it over the next three days to avoid overeating and gastrointestinal issues.
3. **Gradual Feed Transition**
Newly purchased rabbits are highly susceptible to digestive problems if the feed is changed too quickly. Start by feeding them the same feed from the original farm. Over time, mix it with the new feed, and slowly replace the old feed with the new one to ensure a smooth transition.
4. **Disinfection and Disease Prevention**
Isolate the new rabbits for 2–3 weeks and closely monitor their health. Increase the frequency of disinfection during this time. Vaccinate them if necessary, especially if they were not previously vaccinated. To prevent fleas, apply a 1.5% trichlorfon solution in each ear and let the rabbits roll in it.
5. **Group Management**
After 2–3 weeks of observation, if all rabbits are healthy, they can be introduced into the main group. Weak or sick individuals should remain isolated for further treatment. If the rabbits have reached the appropriate weight for breeding, they can be prepared for mating. Proper care during this critical phase ensures better long-term success in rabbit farming.
