In midsummer, the Shu Shu tree enters its active growth phase. However, this period also brings an increase in pests and pathogens that threaten the health of trees, leading to varying levels of damage. To manage these issues effectively, several key pest control methods are recommended:
First, for pine caterpillars, spraying with 25% malathion, 25% dimethoate, or 25% phoxim diluted at a ratio of 2500–3000 times is effective during the 6th instar stage, typically around July.
Second, the American white moth can be controlled by spraying the canopy with 25% diflubenzuron and 40 ppm trichlorfon at a 1000-times dilution from late June to early July, targeting 1st to 3rd instar larvae.
Third, the big bag moth appears in mid-July and late October. At this time, applying 90% trichlorfon crystals diluted 1000–1500 times or 2.5% deltamethrin EC at 5000–10000 times is recommended. Alternatively, drilling three holes into the trunk of dead trees and injecting 50% monocrotophos EC or 80% Phosphine EC (20–40 times, 3–5 ml per hole) can also be effective. The holes should then be sealed with mud.
Fourth, for indigo leaf a, burning pupae clustered on the trunk or spraying with 2.5% deltamethrin emulsion (8000–10000 times) and 40% omethoate (2000 times) in early July helps manage infestations.
Fifth, larch sheath moth adults emerge in late June, with peak activity between 40–50% and 70%. At this stage, using pentachlorophenol sodium smoke agent once can kill adults, or spraying a 1000-times solution of diflubenzuron III during egg-laying periods in early July is also effective.
Sixth, Liu Yu shield shield nymphs appear from late June to early July. Spraying 50% sputum pine oil at 600–800 times or 40% omethoate at 1000 times every 7–10 days is recommended. It's important to apply the treatment before the shell forms, as it becomes harder to penetrate once established.
Seventh, Qingyang Tiger Tianniu can be managed by spraying branches with 50% killer pine oil diluted 800 times every 10–15 days from late June to July, targeting eggs and newly hatched larvae.
Eighth, Yang Gan elephants are active from late June to late July. Spraying 50% schisandra pine oil, 50% malathion at 1000 times, or 2.5% deltamethrin EC at 1000 times can help control them, depending on the infestation level, and may require 1–3 applications.
Ninth, bamboo shoots disease can be addressed by spraying Nanzhu bamboo shoots with 50% carbendazim or 70% thiophanate-methyl at 1000–1500 times every 7–10 days, with up to three treatments possible.
Tenth, peach small borer is controlled by spraying the canopy with 5% yamson pine oil at 1000 times or 2.5% deltamethrin cream at 2000–2500 times in late July.
Eleventh, for light and star longhorn beetles, using aluminum phosphide or zinc phosphide tablets, pills, or poison sticks to block the base of the trunk for 2–3 days, along with injecting wormholes with 50% malathion or 40% dimethoate (20–40 times), or using Beauveria bassiana injections, can be effective.
Twelfth, loose needle disease is managed by applying pentachlorophenol sodium smoke from late June to early July. For optimal results, use 7.5 kg per square meter, and release the smoke on a dry day, either after sunset or before sunrise.
