Rare earth elements are not actually "earth" in the traditional sense, but rather a group of metallic elements with unique properties that make them valuable across various industries. In both domestic and international contexts, they have found widespread application in agriculture, where they help increase crop yields, improve product quality, and enhance plant resistance to environmental stress. Their use has also expanded into aquaculture, particularly in fish farming. Research has shown that rare earth elements can significantly benefit fish farming by improving survival rates, feed conversion efficiency, and disease resistance. They are especially effective in preventing and treating three major bacterial diseases in grass carp: red spot disease, gill rot, and enteritis. The effectiveness of rare earths in disease prevention can be attributed to several factors: First, rare earth ions can interact with pathogenic secretions, inhibiting the growth and reproduction of harmful bacteria while reducing the toxicity of their byproducts. Second, when used at appropriate concentrations, rare earths can stimulate fish appetite, enhance digestive function, and improve overall feed utilization. Third, they promote the growth of plankton in water, which benefits filter-feeding fish by increasing natural food availability. Due to these advantages, many regions are now exploring and implementing rare earth-based aquaculture practices. Here are some common methods currently being used: 1) During peak disease periods, such as July to September, for a pond with 667 square meters (about one mu) and a depth of 1 meter, mix 150 grams of rare earth nitrate or a special rare earth formula (3 packs) with 1 kg of water and a small amount of fruit vinegar to create a mother solution. Use half of this solution mixed with 30–50 kg of water to spray the entire pond. The remaining half should be diluted with water and evenly mixed with 2–3 kg of rice bran or 30–50 kg of tender grass, then fed to the fish. This process is repeated every 15–20 days, four to five times a year. This method has proven effective in preventing and treating fish diseases, with visible results within 3–5 days. 2) From May to October, apply rare earth-enriched feed every 5–8 days. The formula includes 50 grams of rare earth nitrate (or one package of rare earth fish supplement) mixed with 1 liter of water and 25 kilograms of feed. This approach not only helps prevent and control diseases but also promotes faster fish growth. 3) When using rare earth in aquaculture, keep the following in mind: First, it's best to feed fish during the late afternoon, between 5–6 p.m., when they are most active. Second, ensure the water quality is good, with sufficient dissolved oxygen, before applying rare earth feed. Third, avoid overuse, as excessive amounts can hinder fish growth. Lastly, never prepare rare earth solutions in alkaline water, as this may cause precipitation and reduce effectiveness. If possible, test the water quality first to ensure safe and effective application.
